Mother’s Day in America originated as a day to celebrate peace, and we want to tell you why now – this year – marks a new era to achieve our goal of a peaceful future with zero nuclear weapons.

This year we are continuing the tradition of Mother’s Day in the way it was originally intended, as a day to celebrate peace.

Did you know that Mother’s Day in America traces its roots to a mother’s plea for peace in the wake of the American Civil War? It was originally called “Mother’s Day for Peace.”

Julia Ward Howe, best known as the author of the words to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” but also as an abolitionist and women’s suffragist, was moved to propose the establishment of a mother’s peace holiday by the devastating effects of the Civil War. In 1870, she wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to women to promote peace and shape their own political futures.
